The plastic material may be in the form of powders, flakes, granules, or pellets, and are fed from a hopper into an extruder barrel. This plastic is melted gradually using mechanical energy. This energy is generated by heaters that have been placed along the extruder barrel.

A rotating screw that turns at a rate of 120 RPM forces the plastic into the heated barrel. Once the liquid has been melted it is then placed into a die, which provides it with its shape. The plastic then hardens during the cooling process. If any additives are required such as UV inhibitors or colourants, they are mixed in with the plastic before being placed into the hopper.
